History of Soulet-Besombes and the
Montorsi Method ACOM®
In 1953 Prof. Renè Soulet of Clermont-Ferrand University and Prof.
André Besombes of Paris University devised a functional orthopaedic device
they called "douche activator" Soulet Besombes. Almost simultaneously and
independently Prof. Pedro Planas of Madrid University and then Barcelona,
presented a "trail plate” and his theories on the balance of the mouth
formulating his own laws on Neuro-Occlusal Rehabilitation (N.O.R.).
The Soulet-Besombes method found widespread use in France in the '60s,
only to be abandoned in favour of the many therapeutic and commercial aids
promoted by the more lucrative multiband techniques.
Personally, in the 80s, looking for a therapeutic approach aimed at
improving facial asymmetry I started utilizing orthopaedic repositioning plates
using the neuro-muscular technique to find the correct occlusal position as a
starting point from which to base the multiband orthodontic treatment. Not
content, I considered the results partial and in 1985 I approached Applied
Kinesiology and followed a course in Como, which today would be the
equivalent of a Masters, where together with a few other “pioneers” began to
assess the interference of different receptors on the posture.
I came to the realization that in a high percentage of cases using
multiband orthodontic treatment or rigid plates could not only solve the
occlusion problem, but above all heavily interfered with the patient's posture.
Thus I began the search for a gentle more biological therapy by utilising
inferior soft bites continuously monitored and adjusted with the help of
osteopaths but, in the light of my ever growing knowledge in Posturology, these
did not fully convince me as they always reported their own margin of error of
the human impossibility to be with their manual operations within the limit of
tolerance of a few microns sufficient to destabilize the Postural Tonic
In the early 90s whilst working with an Italian pioneer in functional
Podoposturology and a French osteopath, I was introduced to the
Soulet-Besombes method and, given the extremely positive results together
with the testimony of patients enthusiastic by the sensation of well-being
induced by this therapeutic approach I started using only this technique on
hundreds of cases with truly amazing results managing to avoid, when using this
method early on, the extraction of premolars and wisdom teeth even in cases
where the fixed techniques reputed this inevitable.
The finding that the occlusal harmonization resulted in an improvement in the
overall health of the body, both physical and psycho-affective, convinced me of
the correctness/accuracy of this method which can be used on patients of all
In 2003 I decided to give up my dental studio and finally free embarked
on a profession through specialized centres in posture where medical colleagues
of every branch, orthodontists and dentists more farsighted and sensitive to the
welfare of the patient, sent me patients who started the therapy and were
surprised to see symptoms that were considered irreversible disappear and
almost incredulously reported an improved quality of life.
In 2005 I started to customize the method by introducing changes that
have enhanced the postural effect and shortened the time of treatment.
In 2007, due to the increased demand
from colleagues to know more about the method, I wrote the book “Beyond the
Palate. Soulet-Besombes according to Montorsi”.
In 2008, I commenced the Montorsi Method Training Course for
Doctors and Dentists, the 1st of which was a great success and has since
then continued - see the
list of practitioners qualified in the Montorsi Method -
In 2009 I finalized the design of a new device called ACOM – Montorsi
Cranial Occlusal Harmonizer - that further enhances the functional
orthopaedic effect of my technique which is ever more oriented towards the
overall postural balance and resolution of symptoms.
In 2013, following the great success of the book "Beyond the Palate",
a request for further insights by colleagues and patients led me to write the
book "Beyond the Palate II. The ACOM method".
